1903, First Edition. Westminster : Constable. A good to very good set of the seminal Victoria history of the county of Essex as of 2020, and lacking only vol. 9. All copies in gilt-blocked red cloth boards, mostly with an owner's inscription to a front blank. The 1903-1907 volumes show the most wear, with rubbed extremities and stained lower boards; all hinges are cracked, and vol. 1 text (pp. 268-9) is cracked, with mull and cloth joints holding; text is faintly rippled in places, with foxing to some gutters and to the preliminary and final leaves. The 1956-1987 volumes are mostly near-fine red cloth copies in dust-wrappers, which show minor sun-toning, dust, and wear to the edges; vol. 4 and the Bibliography are without their dust-wrappers, internally near-fine, showing lightly foxed edges, and with spines sun-toned, showing minor tears to the headbands. The 2000-2020 volumes are near-fine, tight and sharp-cornered, with vol. 10 showing faint foxing to the edges. A well-preserved set. Item #466238
