The city and country builder's, and workman's treasury of designs : or, The art of drawing, and working the ornamental parts of architecture.
London : printed by J. Ilive for Thomas Langley, 1740. First Edition. Very good copy in later aniline calf over plain boards, showing light wear to the edges and endbands; gilt-blocked title label mounted to the spine. The first two leaves (t.p. and pp. iii-iv) are facsimiles, with the remaining original text block quite strong. Marbled edges, now faded and gently worn at the corners. The interior remains clean overall, showing only scattered and faint foxing, with the earlier and later pages more strongly affected. The first original leaf has a minor tear with loss to the top corner, and a minor tear sans loss to the lower, with text affected in neither case. A damp-stain affects the outer top margin of the text block's latter half, with text again unaffected. Provenance: Bookplate of Marshall Sisson. Notes: This first edition copy includes the original 186 ornamental plates, with 13 of the 14 structural plates (Pl. 2-14) bound in at the end; these additional plates were published by S. Harding in 1741 and later formed the appendix of the second edition (1745), though the first plate of that appendix (Pl. 1) is lacking. Further scans, images and additional bibliographical material available on request. Item #463902
