"Distressed by the lot of the workingman in 19th century industrial England, John Ruskin determined to do something about it. He ppealed to those who could help, to give land or money to his Guild of St George. Small communities would be established to bring waste land back into useful service. These communities would have their own schools, with museums and libraries. Some land was developed and farmed but due to poor support, Ruskin adapted his ideas. This book shows how his dram developed into today's Guild of St George which has land holdings in Worcestershire, Hertfordshire and Glousestershire, and owns an important art collection in Sheffield"--Page [4] of cover.
